Yesterday, the Government of Guyana launched a course of public consultations in respect of regulating children’s use of social media. No doubt, the world wide web and the instrument of the social media present great educational opportunities and facilities for children. However, unregulated, children are similarly exposed to the dark side of the web which have proven to be extremely dangerous to the welfare of children resulting in damaging social and other consequences. Our Government is now taking steps to protect the best interest of the child by regulating access to the internet and social media. Many countries have already moved in this direction. The consultations started yesterday and will continue in due course across the country with the engagement of all important stakeholders. This Presidential initiative is being led by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs & Governance in collaboration with other Ministries of the Government.
